Vauxhall Astra
The new Astra is on sale, with first cars arriving in Vauxhall showrooms this October 2015 after its global debut at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show.
One of the UK's top-selling and best-loved cars, Astra is a household name for British car buyers with almost three million sold in the UK over the last 36 years, including 50,000 in the last 12 months. More than 25 per cent of British motorists have either owned or driven an Astra, so reaction to a new model will always be felt across the market.
New Astra is based on an all-new lightweight vehicle architecture with a new design, powertrains and technology, the Astra is built at Vauxhall's Ellesmere Port manufacturing plant in Cheshire. It is the lead plant for the new model.
Accounting for 12 per cent of C-Segment sales, key rivals in this fiercely competitive sector include the Ford Focus and the Volkswagen Golf. The Astra has a very diverse customer profile appealing to people from all areas of society, male and female, young and old. The retail/fleet split is 70:30 in favour of company car drivers and fleet decision-makers.
Depending on the model and trim level it is up to 200kg lighter than its predecessor. The completely new vehicle architecture plays a major role in the weight reduction. Every component was checked for compact design and lightweight materials. The body shell weight alone was reduced by 20 per cent from 357kg to 280kg.
Additional, chassis-related measures resulted in a further 50kg weight loss. These include high-strength and ultra-high-strength low-weight steels, compact subframes as well as weight reductions to the front and rear axle.
The powertrain portfolio features petrol and diesel units ranging from 100PS to 200PS, including an all-new 1.4-litre (150PS) ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo and the recently-launched 1.6-litre CDTi Whisper Diesel.
New Astra is also the first Vauxhall to feature OnStar, the ground-breaking connectivity technology now available across Europe. OnStar includes high-speed 4G LTE mobile network, emergency response notification and stolen vehicle recovery alert.
Astra is also one of the first vehicles from a mainstream manufacturer to get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, available through a new version of the IntelliLink infotainment system.

Inspired by 2013's Monza Concept, the new car's lean design makes Astra look more athletic than ever before thanks to work carried out by a design team led by Brit Mark Adams.
Evolution of the Vauxhall design philosophy 'sculptural artistry meets technical precision' ensures that the new Astra catches the eye with a lighter, more agile appearance.
"It's smaller on the outside but larger on the inside, highlighting our focus on great efficiency," said Adams.

The Griffin in the centre of the chrome bar on the grille and the characteristic 'blade' rising towards the rear make the new Astra immediately recognisable as a member of the Vauxhall family.
The most significant design cue is the divided C-pillar, creating the impression of a floating roof. The interplay of light and shadow is emphasised by the horizontal crossbar above the brand logo linking the rear lights.
Inside, gracefully sculpted shapes are combined with premium materials and functional clarity. Switches and controls are reduced to an absolute minimum, supporting the efficiency and ease of use that is at the core of the Astra. The centrepiece of the new Astra's interior is the award-winning IntelliLink system. The location of the system was carefully selected to ensure both an ideal view of the display as well as easy reach and use.
"The interior is a blend of sculptural dynamic shapes, premium materials, and an absolute focus on quality of execution and craftsmanship. We seamlessly integrated full width decors, bordered by a signature galvanised blade, to visually emphasise the width, spaciousness, and efficiency of the interior," added Adams.
Depending on the model and trim level the new Astra is up to 200kg lighter than its predecessor. The completely new vehicle architecture plays a major role in the weight reduction. Every component was checked for its compact design and material/weight. The body-in-white weight alone was reduced by 20 per cent from 357kg to 280kg.
A further 50kg was shaved from the weight of the chassis. This was achieved through the use of high-strength and ultra-high-strength low-weight steels, more compact subframes and weight reductions to the front and rear axle.

Inside, newly-designed seats are smaller and 10kg lighter thanks to state-of-the-art packaging methods, lighter polyurethane foams and ultra-high-strength steels that are built in under the robust seat upholstery.
The Astra does not just look smaller - it is smaller. With a total length of 4.37m it is almost 5cm shorter than its predecessor. With a height of 1.48m it is also 2.5cm lower. The wheelbase may have been reduced by 2cm but the amount of space inside increased. In combination with the new seats, the passengers in the rear can enjoy an additional 35mm legroom. The distance between the front- and rear-seats is also increased providing greater comfort and space.
Vauxhall's all-new Astra is one of the most aerodynamic cars in its class thanks to its streamlined design and vehicle architecture. It has a drag coefficient of 0.285, compared with 0.325 for the outgoing model, which helped make the new model more economical and reduce its CO2 emissions.
The new Astra's reduced dimensions also have a positive impact on overall drag, with a cross sectional area of around 0.642m2 (compared with 0.770m2 for its predecessor), and on fuel efficiency.
Vauxhall engineers let the roof flow out gently to the rear to avoid any drag. The delicate rear spoiler serves as an effective separation edge that cuts the airflow at the top without creating any disturbing wake turbulences. Even the C-pillar with its small edges was designed to split airflow more efficiently to reduce drag even further.
Engineers managed to achieve further improvements by overhauling the design of the underbody. Unlike many competitors, Vauxhall decided not to look to a full underbody paneling. Instead, all parts were examined and reworked to ensure better airflow. The underside of the car now has airflow-optimised structures and battery attachment. The new rear axle now sits higher compared with the outgoing model, no longer providing an obstacle for air flowing under the car.
The decision not to use a full underbody paneling also means less weight and consequently lower fuel consumption along with reduced production costs. Advantages that have a positive impact on the price - something that can be passed on to the customer.
"We have made the new Astra more aerodynamic than ever before," said Reiner Weidemann, Head of Vauxhall/Opel's Aerodynamics department. "The drag coefficient values beat the best values achieved by its predecessor across the board. We gained some important knowledge from the tests we conducted in the ultra-modern wind tunnel at Stuttgart University, where we have been working for many years. This helped us make the new Astra the most streamlined compact class car ever produced by Vauxhall."
Under the bonnet, every engine in the Astra range is new-generation as Vauxhall's powertrain offensive continues. The engine portfolio features petrol and diesel units ranging from 100PS to 200PS, including an all-new 1.4-litre (150PS) ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo and the recently-launched 1.6-litre CDTi Whisper Diesel.
From the same family as the one-litre, three-cylinder engine seen in Corsa, ADAM and VIVA, the all-new 1.4-litre (150PS) ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo is one of the highlights of the engine range. It's a four-cylinder petrol unit that delivers maximum torque of up to 245Nm, with maximum power available between 1,800rpm and 4,000rpm. The new 1.4-litre Turbo is also available with 125PS, but identical maximum torque.
The new 1.4-litre Turbo also weighs less than the outgoing unit. The aluminium engine block weighs 10kg less than the cast-iron block of the previous 1.4-litre Turbo. To ensure maximum efficiency the engine is designed to be as light as possible with a hollow cast crankshaft, low friction pump that works at two pressure levels.
Low NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) was a key goal during the development of the 1.4-litre Turbo - just like it was for the three-cylinder unit. The engine block was constructed with resonance reduction in mind which meant taking the following measures:
"These engines making their debut in the Astra are powerful, efficient and cultivated. The all-aluminium unit is not only environmentally friendly but also sets new standards in driving comfort," said Christian Müller, VP GM Powertrain Engineering Europe.
The 150PS version achieves a top speed of 134mph and 0-60mph in 7.8 seconds. Economy is not compromised with 51.4mpg combined and 128g/km emissions.
Elsewhere, the 125PS model achieves a top speed of 127mph and 0-60mph in 8.6 seconds. Again, economy is not compromised with up to 52.3mpg combined and 124g/km of CO2.
The 1.4 ECOTEC comes mated to a six-speed gearbox as standard. An optional six-speed automatic is available from early next year on the 150PS version.
Another highlight of the powertrain offering is the 1.0-litre ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo engine seen previously in both ADAM and Corsa. This three-cylinder petrol engine produces 105PS and delivers maximum torque of 170Nm at only 1,800 rpm, making it incredibly lively.
Equipped with a five-speed manual gearbox, the 1.0-litre Turbo achieves 0-60mph in just 10.5 seconds. It's economical too: the ecoFLEX version with Start/Stop system and low-rolling-resistance tyres returns 67.3mpg and 96g/km CO2.
Available later this year, the all-aluminium 1.4-litre ECOTEC with 100PS and 130Nm of torque provides an alternative option for customers looking for an entry-level petrol offering.
The 1.6-litre ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo is the most powerful petrol engine in the Astra range.
The 200PS turbocharged direct injection engine's block can withstand maximum cylinder pressure of 130 bar and offers an impressive 300Nm of torque (with overboost) which helps it achieve 0-60 in 7.3 seconds and a top speed of 146mph.
To achieve outstanding smoothness across the full engine speed range, Astra engineers optimised to the induction and exhaust systems and decoupled the cam cover from the cylinder head via specific fasteners and a dedicated sealing system. Despite direct injection, they were able to substantially reduce noise levels compared with the previous engine.
Clean and frugal, the 1.6 CDTi is available with three outputs: 110PS, 136PS and a BiTurbo version with 160PS.
The 1.6 CDTi (110PS) ecoFLEX variant has the lowest CO2 emissions in the Astra range at just 82g/km and it is also the most efficient, achieving 91.1mpg combined.
Introduced to the current Astra last year, the 136PS 1.6 CDTi benefits from the new model's substantial weight reduction, reducing its 0-60mph acceleration time by nearly one second from 9.7 to 9.0 seconds. Despite this, fuel consumption is still 76.3mpg on the combined cycle.
At the same time, the engine transfers torque of up to 320Nm to the crankshaft. The 136PS diesel is available with both a six-speed manual and six-speed automatic transmission.
Since their introduction, these Whisper Diesel engines have been setting standards in noise levels and vibrations based on the optimised component design, efficient combustion process with multiple injection and further acoustic measures.
A high-pressure, common-rail fuel injection system and the LNT catalytic converter for nitrogen oxide (NOx) make these Whisper Diesel units kinder to the environment. The so-called Lean NOx Trap (LNT), an exhaust after-treatment system upstream of the diesel particulate filter, captures and removes nitrogen oxides from the exhaust gases without the use of additives.
Six-speed automatic transmission with ActiveSelect function
A six-speed automatic transmission is optional on 1.4i (150PS) and 1.6CDTi (136PS) models. On the road, a wide selection of shift patterns is adapted to the style and habits of the driver, anticipating when maximum acceleration or maximum efficiency is required. The electronic control will also adapt to the prevailing road conditions, reducing gear shifting when climbing or descending gradients and using engine braking assistance during down changes.
The ActiveSelect manual mode allows the gear lever to be used like a sequential manual gearbox - you simply push the lever forward or back to change up or down the gears. The driver also benefits from a 'neutral' gear disengagement at idle, which reduces vibration and contributes to improved fuel consumption.
As with almost all new Vauxhall passenger cars, chassis development on UK roads plays an important role before vehicles are signed off. New Astra is no exception, with early prototype 'mules' being tested on the most demanding mix of English and Welsh roads in 2014, more than a year ahead of production.
During this process, Astra was benchmarked against its key rivals to ensure that steering, ride, grip and control were fully optimised. This chassis validation provided engineers with the data needed to not only make the Astra an exceptional car for British drivers on real-world UK roads, but also to produce a set up that will benefit motorists across Europe too.
'We spent a lot of time with New Astra on UK roads,' said Michael Harder, Engineering Supervisor for Vehicle Dynamics. 'With all sorts of corners, awkward cambers and aggressive surfaces, it's a tuning paradise.'
And keeping the car's weight to a minimum helped the engineering team develop a car that was not only safe and comfortable, but rewarding to drive. In addition to an 80kg-lighter body-in-white, New Astra also benefits from a further 50kg reduction in weight from its chassis. This has been achieved through use of high-strength and ultra-high-strength low-weight steels, compact subframes and weight reductions to the front and rear axle.
The new body structure's torsional rigidity has not been compromised, registering an increase from 18.6 to 19.0kNm/degree. This solid structure ensures a firm foundation for optimising the new Astra's handling and ride characteristics, as well as helping to reduce noise and vibration in the cabin.
MacPherson struts are retained for the front suspension and the torsion beam rear axle continues to feature Vauxhall's innovative use of a Watt's link for improved comfort and stability. While the front track is identical to that of the previous Astra generation, the rear track is now 8mm narrower and the vehicle's wheelbase 23mm shorter. Wheel sizes range between 16- and 18-inch.
Vauxhall engineers were the first in the world to combine a torsion beam rear axle with a Watt's link. This cleverly designed, innovative system, patented by Vauxhall, was fine-tuned and enhanced for the new Astra. It delivers all of the dynamic advantages of an independent, multi-link layout without any of the traditional design penalties, such as added mass, greater complexity and inefficient packaging. Compared with a multi-link arrangement, the torsion beam also gives greater wheel camber stiffness, with less camber loss in body roll during cornering.
Enhanced lateral stability for improved handling and greater ride comfort is provided by the Watt's link, now even lighter in weight. The linkage ensures that side forces exerted against one wheel during cornering are simultaneously countered by the application of equal, opposing forces against the other wheel. On the road, this effectively reduces any lateral movement of the axle, increasing vehicle stability. The mechanical linkage consists of two lateral rods: the outer end of each is attached to the lower wheel carrier and the inner ends are connected via ball joints to a central pivot link mounted to a small subframe which is connected to the car's underbody. The swivel action of the pivot ensures that any movement in one rod is immediately matched by an equal, opposing motion in the other. Vauxhall engineers estimate that this link absorbs about 80 per cent of all lateral loadings on the rear suspension.
An additional advantage of the Watt's link is that it reduces axle bush loads and therefore allows the use of softer bushings. In this way, ride comfort and road noise isolation are all greatly improved. The open, U-section torsion beam is mounted between the trailing arms just ahead of the rear wheels. By varying the thickness of the beam's walls, and also its weld angle, roll-rate and roll-steer characteristics can be finely adjusted to match the specific engine power and vehicle weight of each new Astra variant.
The top mountings of the MacPherson struts are de-coupled to separate the paths of spring and damper loadings. To reduce unsprung weight and optimise weight distribution, the combined strut carrier is in aluminium, while the anti-roll bar is in hollow steel. The lower, L-shaped control arms are made of mass-optimised sheet metal and attached through two bushings to a steel front subframe. The suspension geometry and the tuning of the bushes are designed to provide both lateral stiffness and longitudinal compliance for excellent handling and good ride comfort. The rearmost bushing is also elastomerically damped, helping to prevent the transmission of road shocks through the steering wheel.
This latest evolution of the MacPherson strut layout results in excellent roadholding and has been developed in combination with the improved, electrically-powered steering to deliver precise control and handling characteristics.
The dual-circuit braking system comes in one of three combinations: '15-inch' specification (276 mm ventilated front discs with 264 mm solid rear discs), '16-inch' specification (300 mm ventilated front discs with 288 mm solid rear discs); plus a '16-inch/15-inch' alternative which uses the larger front and smaller rear discs. These combinations are fitted according to the specific powertrain/transmission package used for each model variant.
Electronic Stability Control (ESC) is standard across the range. The ESC yaw sensor in the centre of the car detects movement around the vertical axis and another sensor on the steering column measures the steering angle being applied. These inputs are then correlated with the speed of the vehicle, and the system is programmed to execute whatever actions will most effectively prevent the onset of a loss of control. Depending upon the driving situation, it is possible for braking to be applied to one, two or three wheels at once, and, if necessary, the electronic throttle opening may be reduced.
ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) and Traction Control
Electronic Brake Force Distribution controls front to rear axle brake force, ensuring vehicle stability and maximum rear axle brake torque independent of axle load distribution.
Cornering Brake Control provides directional vehicle stability during cornering while braking.
Torque Vectoring by Brakes improves agility and gives a more direct steering feel by initiating braking interventions at the inner wheel of the rear axle or both axles, while engine torque may also be increased to counterbalance the effect. Accordingly, the understeer tendency of the car is reduced and the car stays more neutral, even at a higher curve speed. The driver should not detect such interventions, which are sensitively applied according to steering behaviour.
Cornering Torque Control prevents the inner driven wheel from spinning when cornering under acceleration, decreasing any understeer tendency.
Electronic Drag Torque Control avoids wheel slip caused by high engine drag torque and maintains vehicle steerability.
Brake Assist System supports the driver in emergency braking situations by ensuring full master cylinder brake pressure is applied.
Hydraulic Brake Assist Fade provides full deceleration under extreme fading in the brake system. Triggered by vehicle speed, brake pedal application velocity and brake disc temperature, the ABS pump sucks brake fluid from the reservoir into the brake circuits.
Brake Disc Cleaning periodically removes contamination by applying very light pressure to the pads so they contact the discs without generating any noticeable brake torque. The effectiveness of the braking system is maintained, especially under wet road conditions.
Trailer Stability Program is active when a Vauxhall-approved towing hitch is fitted and detects any vehicle instability when towing a trailer or caravan. It reduces engine torque and applies brake pressure to selected wheels.
Space-saving Electric Parking Brake (EPB)
The easy-to-use EPB, standard on Elite and optional on SRi models, provides greater convenience than a conventional handbrake lever, while also freeing up valuable additional storage space. The system is now improved for greater comfort and reduced operating noise. Whereas the previous version used a cable puller, a new 'Motor on Caliper' (MoC) concept actuates the rear brakes directly, eliminating cable losses. To engage the EPB, the driver simply pulls a switch located near the gearshift which sends an electrical signal to the actuators on the rear brake calipers. The EPB can secure the car on gradients as steep as 30 percent. It is automatically disengaged when the vehicle drives off.
The EPB is combined with a Hill Start Assist (HSA) function, which helps minimise any downhill movement of the car and puts less stress on the clutch (and the driver) when moving off on an uphill slope. The HSA briefly maintains pressure at all four brakes to minimize the possibility of the vehicle moving when the driver's foot moves from the brake to the accelerator pedal while engaging the clutch.
The new Astra's rack-and-pinion steering system is electrically, rather than hydraulically, powered to help reduce fuel consumption. This speed-sensitive system is now 2.8kg lighter, a weight saving of about 18 per cent, and also more energy-efficient, requiring less power assistance at all speeds. It has been optimised to give a more direct steering feel. Several refinements provide greater comfort. Smooth Road Shake (SRS) compensation helps reduce any steering wheel vibration which may be caused by a road wheel imbalance. And Drift Pull Compensation (DPC) automatically corrects any pull or drift tendency to keep the vehicle steering straight ahead.
The steering column features a +/- 30mm reach and +/- 25mm rake adjustment range that enables every driver to find the most comfortable steering wheel position.
Vauxhall has always been known for bringing innovations and technology to the mainstream. The new Astra continues this tradition with the addition of cutting-edge connectivity including OnStar, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Also making its debut is Vauxhall's next-generation R4.0 IntelliLink infotainment system. This brings smartphone connectivity and apps in to the cabin for customers with compatible Android 5.0 Lollipop and Apple iOS 8 (or higher) smartphones.
With the integration of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, users can access maps and message reading, and additional, third party apps such as Stitcher, Podcast, Spotify and Umano (depending on the integration system) via the car controls and large touchscreens.
The Astra is the first all-new Vauxhall model that will be available with OnStar's ground-breaking connectivity technology from launch.
OnStar turns the new Astra into a 4G LTE mobile Wi-Fi hotspot. Up to seven devices, from smartphones to tablets, can be connected simultaneously. The built-in 4G LTE structure is specifically designed for in-vehicle use. It is integrated into the vehicle's electrical system and includes an external antenna to maximise connectivity and deliver a stable internet connection. As the OnStar system comprises an independent SIM card encapsulated in its module, customers are not required to have a smartphone to use connected services. The UK is one of the first GM markets in Europe to offer 4G LTE, along with Germany and Holland.
OnStar also offers customers a broad range of safety and comfort services. If an airbag deploys, OnStar will be alerted automatically. An advisor will then contact the vehicle to determine whether help is required. If there is no response, emergency responders are immediately sent to the exact location of the vehicle.
Drivers and passengers can reach OnStar 24/7 and 365 days a year at its UK-based contact centre. No matter whether they need roadside assistance or any other service - an OnStar advisor is always ready to help.
OnStar's only visible feature inside the car is a module comprising three buttons that is located close to the interior rear view mirror above the windscreen. The blue Service Button gives access to comfort services such as Vehicle Diagnostics and Destination Download. For example, OnStar subscribers looking for a certain destination such as a restaurant or the closest petrol station press it to contact an OnStar advisor who will send the desired destination directly to the navigation system embedded in the vehicle.
The Privacy button allows the subscriber to mask the position of their car and become invisible to the system, ensuring OnStar subscribers are in complete control of their data. To provide maximum safety for subscribers, OnStar will automatically overrule the privacy command if an airbag is deployed.
In addition, OnStar subscribers can also download the MyVauxhall Smartphone App. It allows them to contact OnStar from anywhere via their smartphone, for example, if their car has been stolen, needs to be located and the ignition blocked at some point. The app also enables the subscriber to remotely access important vehicle data such as oil life and tyre pressure, or to remotely lock or unlock their car.
The entire OnStar service portfolio is available on the new Astra and free of charge for the first 12 months after registration.
Phone integration via Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
Making its debut in new Astra is the new generation R4.0 IntelliLink infotainment system that is compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Each system builds off of the features smartphone users rely on most.
Apple CarPlay takes the iPhone features you'd want to access while driving and puts them on the vehicle's display in a smart, simple manner, allowing drivers to make calls, send and receive messages and listen to music right from the touchscreen or by voice via Siri. Apple CarPlay supported apps include Phone, Messages, Maps, Music and compatible third party apps. A full list of those apps can be found at Apple.com/iOS/carplay.
Available now on the R4.0 IntelliLink system and due next year on the Navi 900 system, Android Auto is built around Google Maps, Google Now and the ability to talk to Google, as well as a growing audio and messaging app ecosystem that includes WhatsApp, Skype, Google Play Music, Spotify, and podcast players. The functions can be controlled via the large, up to 8-inch touchscreen located high on the centre stack, via remote control on the steering wheel (volume) or via voice control.
In combination with OnStar, smartphones can be easily connected to the car's Wi-Fi Hotspot. This brings additional phone integration benefits such as real-time traffic information or the latest maps, and thanks to the map data being stored on a server instead of the phone, it saves memory on the device.
All radios come with Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity, audio streaming, aux-in, USB ports and Digital Audio Broadcast DAB+ as standard, enabling a better radio selection and reception.
In addition, Navi 900 IntelliLink offers a high level of personalisation - the home screen can be tailored according to customer preferences. It also offers a favourites concept, which gives users a possibility to adapt the infotainment system to their individual needs. Up to 60 favourites including radio stations, phone contacts, artists, playlists and navigation destinations can be stored.
To ensure that passengers can charge their devices properly while enjoying a movie, chatting to friends or surfing the internet via the Wi-Fi Hotspot included with OnStar, new Astra Elite models have been fitted with two 2,100 mA USB ports in the rear. An optional smartphone holder for the PowerFlex Bar Adapter with integrated 5V power supply adds to the seamless integration of personal devices.
The Brit-built Astra will be the first Vauxhall to get glare-free IntelliLux LED Matrix headlights.
Bringing premium technology to the mainstream, these new LED headlights provide outstanding night time performance enhancing safety for the driver and other road users.
Consisting of 16 LED segments (eight on each side of the vehicle) the LED matrix system automatically and constantly adapts the length and distribution of the light beam to every traffic situation.
It works in conjunction with the front camera system which detects the presence of other vehicles and then switches off the individual LED segments, preventing other road users from being dazzled.
As soon as the vehicle exits urban areas, the high-beam lighting is automatically switched on and it always remains on. This leads to a considerable increase in safety, as confirmed in a study conducted by the Technical University of Darmstadt and the European LightSightSafety Initiative.
The study showed that at driving speeds of 50mph, drivers detect objects at the side of the road around 30m to 40m sooner than with conventional Halogen or xenon dipped-beam lighting. This gives them around 1.5 seconds more time to react, for example when an animal walks into the vehicle's path.
When the camera detects light sources from oncoming or preceding traffic, individual LEDs in the relevant zone are deactivated, simply "cutting out" the area around the vehicles. The rest of the road and its surroundings remain brightly illuminated.
In addition to the many automatic low and high beam pattern variations, IntelliLux LED also provides a special highway light mode that further increases safety at night. And a special welcome light function makes entering and exiting the Astra more comfortable in the dark.
Not only does the system illuminate the surroundings brighter than conventional lighting systems, it also has a considerably longer running life than headlights with Halogen or xenon lamps.
Another advantage is that mechanical movements are no longer necessary in the headlight - the individual LED segments turn on or off according to the situation, which also contributes to a durability that far exceeds the lifespan of a car.

"Our new LED matrix light, IntelliLux, is a perfect example. With the introduction of this lighting technology to the new Astra, Vauxhall is the first manufacturer to offer the next-generation, highly-efficient and high-performance lighting system in the compact class. Our integration of LED technology provides outstanding night time performance, dramatically reducing the stress of driving at night while enhancing safety for drivers and those around them."
Automatically activated in situations with exterior ambient light, such as in urban areas, at vehicle speeds up to 35mph. The Town Light pattern is wide and symmetric, adjusted to lit urban roads. It has been designed to prevent glare affecting other traffic participants in busy traffic environments.
On tight bends or when turning, depending on the steering angle or the indicator light signal and speed, an additional left or right reflector is switched on, illuminating the road in the direction of travel. Cornering situations are no longer "black holes". This feature is activated up to 40mph.
To assist the driver when parking, the Static Bending Light also illuminates poorly lit areas when the reverse gear is engaged.
Country Light improves illumination of the road and roadside with a brighter and wider light cone to both sides of the road, while a longer light beam illuminates the driver's own lane, so that oncoming traffic is not blinded. The matrix segments and the function are activated at vehicle speeds over 35mph.
From speeds above 65mph, individual matrix segments on the left side are successively switched off to avoid dazzling preceding or oncoming traffic.
When the engine stops, for example at traffic lights, Town Light is partially deactivated. Compared to high beam, the energy-saving mode reduces the performance of the matrix segments by 50 per cent. The full performance of the light is restored as soon as the engine restarts.
The Tourist Mode can easily be activated through the personalisation menu. It adapts the lighting functionality from left hand drive to right hand drive or vice-versa and guarantees the perfect road illumination in all situations without blinding other drivers in any country the Astra driver visits.
The new Astra is not only lighter and more efficient than its predecessors, it also features innovative driver assistance systems and comfort features to make journeys safer and more relaxed.
Driving Assistance Pack One (Front Camera System)
The improved next generation front camera has higher image processing power, an increased detection rate and it processes an additional amount of information from different sources. When combined with Navi 900 IntelliLink, it draws on data from the navigation system and also that detected by the camera. This allows it to provide the driver with more accurate information than ever before.
Thanks to this enhanced capability, the Astra's Traffic Sign Assist offers improved performance. Now available as standard on Sri models, it features even higher precision and can detect and display round and rectangular traffic signs or speed limit related add-on signs with graphic symbols, while the multiple exposure technology improves the detection rate of dynamic - such as LED - signs. Major news in the compact class segment is the fact that, in conjunction with Navi 900 IntelliLink, Traffic Sign Assist also continuously checks the front camera and navigation data for relevance. It displays speed limits, when entering an urban area for instance, and the end of these, when exiting an urban area, for eight seconds before then displaying the country-specific speed limit for the respective type of road. In addition, it gives an immediate indication of speed limits after turning to a different type of road. In the new Astra, speed limits are permanently displayed on the screen located between the speedometer and the rev counter, reducing the risk of speeding tickets.
Another clever feature in the new Astra is Following Distance Indication that drivers can activate on the central display. It utilises the front camera to detect moving vehicles on the road ahead and calculates the distance to them. This value is then displayed to the driver in seconds. This indication approach is in line with the regulations in most European countries, which define distance in terms of time, not in meters. A stylised green car symbolizes the vehicle in front. If the distance is insufficient, the Headway Alert function is automatically activated and the symbol turns amber.
Lane Departure Warning, now also with Lane Keep Assist, is an active safety feature making its Vauxhall debut in the new Astra. As before, it recognises road markings, but it now gently turns the steering wheel in addition to the well-known alerts if the Astra's driver should unintentionally veer out of lane. The system works at speeds ranging from 37mph to 111mph but does not continuously steer the vehicle. If the steering torque does not prevent departure (e.g. on curves), the amber Lane Keep Assist icon flashes and provides three warning tone as the lane marker is crossed to provide a Lane Departure Warning alert. The steering wheel nudges and alerts are disabled if the driver is detected to be actively steering, braking, accelerating or if a turn signal is activated. The intelligent software required for Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning has been developed completely in house.
When the new Astra is equipped with the front camera, it also offers Forward Collision Alert with Collision Mitigation Braking functions. The Forward Collision Alert (FCA) feature assists drivers in avoiding or mitigating the impact of front-end collisions, for example colliding with the vehicle ahead. If the gap shrinks below a safe distance, it warns the driver with a loud audible alarm, a visual warning in the instrument cluster and, now, an LED projection on the windscreen. The driver can adjust the safety distance of FCA to objects ahead with 'near' 'mid' or 'far' settings via a switch located on the steering wheel. The system now also includes Integrated Brake Assist and Autonomous Emergency Braking. If it detects that the driver's braking effort following the warning is nonexistent or insufficient, it can boost the braking (Integrated Brake Assist) or automatically brake the vehicle (Autonomous Emergency Braking), helping avoid or lessening the severity of crashes at relatively low speeds. The system works at speeds above 5mph and below 50mph. At speeds below 25mph the system can avoid the collision by performing full braking. Scientific studies conducted by Vauxhall have revealed that the reflective LEDs in the windscreen can have a positive impact of up to 250 milliseconds on reaction times and can ultimately lead to an impact speed reduction of between 6mph and 12mph.
The new Astra is the first compact class car offered by a volume manufacturer with a mono-camera approach for all functions. It is the first Vauxhall that offers assisted braking with the information received only from the camera.
This system warns drivers about hidden dangers. When changing lanes, overtaking or turning a corner, other road users can disappear in the blind spot. Ultrasonic sensors permanently scan wide areas around the vehicle at speeds ranging from 6mph to 87mph. If the electronic guardians pick up an object in the blind spot, an optical amber-colored warning appears in the relevant exterior door mirror. If the turn indicator is applied towards the direction of the object in the blind spot, the optical LED warning starts flashing. The light intensity of the LEDs is high and the warning cannot be missed even if the sun is shining. Vauxhall's Side Blind Spot Alert system has won the Euro NCAP Advanced Reward for advanced safety technology.
Advanced Park Assist and Rear View Camera
Another comfort feature that makes driving the Astra easier to drive is Park Assist with ultrasonic front and rear sensors. Park Assist is always active below 7mph and automatically notifies the driver when it detects objects within the range of its sensors. Drivers are presented with optical information on the display area including the distance to the other object and its position (front/rear; left/center/right). In addition, the distance is indicated acoustically. The new generation Advanced Park Assist identifies suitable parking spaces and automatically parks the vehicle, without the driver touching the wheel. The ultrasonic sensor-based system measures parallel or perpendicular parking spots, calculates the vehicle's trajectory and automatically steers the Astra into a space. The driver just controls acceleration, deceleration and gear shifting.
Astra drivers can make parking and reversing even easier by adding the Rear View Camera to Park Assist. Mounted above the rear licence plate, it shows the area behind the vehicle on the infotainment screen. The display is activated by engaging reverse gear and automatically switches off either 10 seconds after reverse has been disengaged or when the vehicle exceeds 4mph driving forward. A special feature of the Rear View Camera system is the dynamic guidelines that show the actual vehicle path based on the steering wheel angle, helping drivers to estimate distances to other objects while manoeuvring.
The extensive list of active safety features and driver assistance systems available for the new Astra is accompanied by a comprehensive passive safety concept. The basis of this concept is a rigid passenger cell mainly fabricated from high-strength steel that has been designed for the least possible deformations and the largest possible survival space in crash conditions. To accommodate the impact energy in case of a crash, the front, sides and rear of the passenger compartment are surrounded by energy absorption zones that deform and protect in a controlled manner.
Astra engineers have taken a three-part approach for the standard airbag system consisting of front airbags for driver and co-driver, thorax-pelvis side airbags and full-length curtain airbags for the first and second row. Combined with the advanced front safety systems consisting of body-mounted retractor/pretensioners with load limiter, seat-mounted lap pretensioners and seat-integrated pelvis ramp, the new Astra ensures maximum passenger protection and reduces injury potential.
In addition to the active and passive safety features, the new Vauxhall Astra is also available with a host of comfort features - which also positively affect safety - such as the new AGR (Campaign for Healthier Backs) certified premium ergonomic seats. They provide excellent long-distance travel seating comfort and continue the tradition of award-winning, back-friendly seats that are offered at very attractive prices. Beyond being 18-way adjustable, they are now also optionally available with further comfort features such as side bolser adjustment, massage and memory function along with ventilation - a unique combination in the compact class. Rear seat passengers can also look forward to more luxury - in addition to more legroom, heated outer rear seats are standard on Elite models.
Wellness massage, ventilation and heating
Seats should not only keep drivers securely in place, they should also keep them warm or cool depending on the prevailing conditions. The new Astra comfort seat features passive climate control, meaning breathable surface fabrics and perforated polyurethane foams that considerably improve transporting away moisture and thereby the micro climate in the seat. The new Astra's premium power driver's seat can do both - keep warm and cool. Small fans suck air, and thus the moisture that develops when someone is in the seat, away from the body. In the winter, integrated seat heating keeps the driver and co-driver as well as both outer rear seat passengers comfortably warm.
Vauxhall's all-new Astra will be in showrooms in October priced from £15,295 on-the-road.
The new model is up to £2,200 less expensive than the outgoing model with a simplified range. The new Astra range includes Design, Tech Line, Energy, SRi and Elite, with Nav versions of the SRi and Elite trims also available.
Range highlights include the 1.0-litre three-cylinder Turbo Start/Stop ecoFLEX model priced from £15,995 on-the-road. With an Easytronic five-speed automatic transmission, the same model achieves a class-leading 96g/km CO2 emissions. The range-topping 1.6-litre (200PS) is available in SRi trim priced from £20,435 on-the-road. The diesel offering includes the 1.6-litre 'Whisper Diesel' (110PS) Start/Stop ecoFLEX model (prices start at £17,495 on-the-road) that achieves 91.1mpg and class-leading CO2 emissions of 82g/km (provisional).
