Alpina BMW XD4
The foremost goal during the development of the new BMW ALPINA XD3 and XD4 models was to push the envelope further and to improve upon the core values of the predecessor. Utilising state-of-the-art engine technology the new models offer an unrivalled driving experience in this segment characterised by power, torque, dynamic handling and comfort.
Building upon the excellence of the new BMW 3.0-liter straight-six engine with quad-turbocharging and common-rail high-pressure direct injection, the drivetrain of the new BMW ALPINA XD3 and XD4 delivers a power output of 285 kW (388 hp). This is available over a wide bandwidth ranging from 4000 to 5000 rpm. The maximum torque of 770 Nm is already available from just 1750 rpm and up to 3000 rpm.
The resulting performance figures are impressive, the new BMW ALPINA XD3 and XD4 accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.6 seconds and have a top speed of 266 km/h and 268 km/h respectively - meaning they are currently fastest-in-segment!
The permanent two-stage turbocharging system with four turbochargers offers maximum performance. It comprises two large low-pressure stages operating in parallel and two small high-pressure stages with variable turbine geometry which also operate in parallel. As a result, power delivery is smooth, effortless, and - for a diesel - unusually dynamic over the entire rpm range.
More output requires more cooling. The high-performance cooling package of the new BMW ALPINA XD3 and XD4 is designed for maximum effectiveness. Large volume coolers and optimised coolant hosing allow high throughput rates. An indirect intercooler set-up keeps air intake distances short. A primary air-water cooler located in front of the engine supplies a large volume water-air intercooler. Additionally three external coolers and a transmission oil cooler guarantee thermodynamic stability even under highest loads.
For ALPINA, low consumption and emissions have always been a high priority, often resulting in pioneering solutions first introduced in small series production. The SUPERKAT - an electronically heated metal catalytic converter - is a great example, meaning NOx and CO emissions were 80% less than required by regulations in 1996. The new BMW ALPINA XD3 and XD4 feature the latest in exhaust gas treatment technology. In addition to a diesel particulate filter and a NOx storage catalytic converter, a SCR catalytic converter with aqueous urea solution injection (AdBlue®) reduces emissions to a minimum. The AdBlue® tank volume is 20 litres which typically equates to an average range of 10.000 km.
Fuel consumption measured according to the new and more realistic WLTP (Worldwide Harmonized Light-Duty Vehicle Test Procedure) is 9.0 l/100 km with CO2 emissions of 238 g/km.
The new BMW ALPINA XD3 and XD4 offer an unrivalled range of driving experiences. Core development aim was to improve the suspension and chassis proportionate to the higher performance of the powertrain. That is to introduce a more dynamic and sharper handling without sacrificing the ALPINA typical ride comfort.
The ALPINA sport suspension uses electronically adjustable dampers for balanced chassis characteristics. Focus was placed on improving lateral driving dynamics markedly and on providing a wide range differentiation between the different driving modes. Using the Driving Experience Control switch the suspension is adjustable in rebound and compression - ranging from maximum dynamics in Sport+ Mode to maximum ride comfort in Comfort+ Mode. The use of sport springs, both stiffer and shorter, results in a lower centre of gravity for a further optimisation of handling and aerodynamics.
One degree of negative camber at the front axle means both the BMW ALPINA XD3 and the XD4 exhibit very neutral handling and excellence lateral grip. A variable ratio electromechanical steering rack with ALPINA adaptation ensures precise steering and also requires less steering input at lower speeds, for example when parking.
Fitted as standard are trademark ALPINA CLASSIC 20" wheels with twenty spokes, lockable hub covers and hidden air valves - the air reaching the tire via a hollow drilled spoke. Truly stand-alone - the BMW ALPINA XD3 and the XD4 are the only SUV's in this segment optionally available with a stunning 22" wheel and tire combination. With a technical, minimalistic design, the high-density forged aluminium ALPINA CLASSIC 22" wheels result in a reduction of unsprung masses of 15 kg or nearly 30 % compared to conventional cast aluminium wheels of the same size.
Ultra-high-performance tyres from Pirelli measuring 255/45 ZR20 front and 285/40 ZR20 rear (EU tyre label: E / B / 75 dB) are responsible for perfect road holding and grip. The optional 22" wheel and tyre set-up, a new development by Pirelli for the BMW ALPINA XD3 and XD4, measures 255/35 ZR22 front and 295/30 ZR22 rear (EU tyre label: E / B / 75 dB). Both the 20" and the 22" Pirelli P Zero with ALP labelling have been explicitly developed in accordance to ALPINA's requirements with regards to dynamics and comfort. Combining motorsport technology with a flat shoulder contour and an innovative tread pattern facilitates high lateral loads and precise steering feeling without compromising wet handling.
Designed to match the performance of the new BMW ALPINA XD3 and XD4, the brake system incorporates a four piston fixed-calliper with Ø 395 mm discs at the front and a floating-calliper with Ø 370 mm discs at the rear. A high-performance brake system is optionally available - this combines lightweight drilled composite discs measuring Ø 395 mm at the front and Ø 398 mm at the rear with sport-spec brake pads for even more fading resistance under very high loads (Attention: sport-spec brake pads and drilled brake discs can lead to increased brake noise or brake vibration).
The new BMW ALPINA XD3 and XD4 capitalise on the technical potential of BMW's xDrive system and its intelligent and dynamic distribution of drive power which continuously and fully variable distributes torque between the front and rear axle within milliseconds for maximum traction and control. The programming of the torque distribution control, which is interconnected with the Dynamic Stability Control and the engine management system, is performance-oriented and it increases driving agility and dynamics markedly - especially under lateral acceleration - while maintaining balanced and neutral handling. Besides allowing optimum traction under acceleration by eliminating slip induced losses, the system continuously monitors a wide range of sensory inputs - for example steering angle, lateral acceleration, yaw angle and speed - to distribute torque so as to achieve maximum safety in challenging conditions or when encountering sudden changes in road surface friction. The DTC Mode of the Dynamic Stability Control offers an even more pronounced rear wheel drive torque distribution and allows for more slip when driving at the limit.
Both the BMW ALPINA XD3 and XD4 come with an electronically controlled active rear limited slip differential. This improves traction when driving dynamically by ensuring that slip-induced losses are minimised and torque is distributed effectively to the wheel with the most grip at any given point in time. This further enhances driving dynamics, even in combination with all-wheel drive, and operates in conjunction with the ALPINA specific, rear-wheel biased, torque distribution.
The latest generation 8-Speed Sport Automatic Transmission with ALPINA SWITCHTRONIC is specifically refined and adapted to the torque and performance of the straight-six cylinder diesel engine in collaboration with ZF, it offers exceptional shift comfort. In Automatic Mode the combination of eight gears and high engine torque makes for relaxed, luxurious cruising at low engine rpm even when travelling at speed.
In Sport Mode the shift points are optimized for improved driving performance and gear changes are considerably more dynamic. It is also possible to activate a Launch Control function in this mode. For maximum dynamic performance, the driver selects the Manual Mode thereby actuating gear changes manually using the SWITCH-TRONIC buttons on the back of the steering wheel. In addition to extremely fast shift times close to a tenth of a second, this mode also supresses forced upshifts in the engine speed limit range. Central components of the transmission such as the torque converter and and planetary wheel sets are designed to specifically cope with the high torque.
The powerful and dynamic appearance of the new BMW ALPINA XD3 and XD4 is strongly influenced by the unique design of the beautiful new lightweight forged ALPINA CLASSIC 22" optional wheels and their technical, minimalistic design. ALPINA specific design and aerodynamic components integrate seamlessly into the BMW design language. The new BMW ALPINA XD3 in the format of a typical mid-sized SUV has matured significantly, with bold and dynamic aesthetics and a modern exterior design. The all new BMW ALPINA XD4 features an elegant sloping roofline that transitions seamlessly into a rear spoiler which is positioned above dominant L-shaped rear lights and a rear diffusor.
Large openings in the front apron allow sufficient air to reach the high-performance cooling system. The iconic BMW kidney grille is fitted with an integrated air flap control system that adapts to the engine's cooling needs and when closed reduces aerodynamic drag. The design of the aerodynamic components blends form and function - reducing uplift on the front and rear axle to almost zero for maximum driving stability at all speeds. Both the BMW ALPINA XD3 and XD4 feature an exhaust system with two elliptical twin tailpipes which are elegantly integrated in the rear apron.
The interiors of the new BMW ALPINA XD3 and XD4 offer a spacious ambience, characterised by fine materials and modern clarity. Discreet details add touches of exclusivity and individualisation. For example the hand-crafted ALPINA sports steering wheel finished in luxurious LAVALINA leather with blue/green stitching, the ALPINA door sills and the trademark production plaque. A timeless ALPINA Piano Lacquer interior trim with three dimensional logo is optionally available.
A full-colour digital instrument panel in LED technology features a standalone ALPINA design. In Comfort Mode it shows classic instruments with a blue background, red needles and clearly legible figures. In Sport Mode the display changes to dynamic style with green drag indicators.
