Volkswagen T-Roc [UK]
An overwhelming success story for the Volkswagen brand, the T-Roc has become a global bestseller since its debut in 2017 at the Frankfurt Motorshow. Updating such a popular model was never going to be an easy task, but the brand's designers and engineers have risen to the challenge, as we present the second-generation Volkswagen T-Roc compact SUV. Debuting in the UK in the spring of 2026, and building on sales that have seen it consistently occupy a 'podium place' here behind only the legendary Golf and hugely popular Tiguan SUV, today's new T-Roc is, indeed, significantly improved across the board.
The success of the first-generation T-Roc, both here and around the world, cannot be overstated. From a standing start in 2017 the model quickly established itself as a mainstay of the Volkswagen line-up, with more than two million examples sold across the globe in the past nine years. In the UK alone in 2025, the T-Roc racked up 28,075 registrations (including Cabriolet models). Or, to put it another way, almost one in six new Volkswagens registered here last year was a T-Roc. The new car is set to build on that exceptional sales performance, too. Larger inside and out - and already an award winner (Best Small SUV at the 2026 What Car? Awards) - today's T-Roc sees the arrival of new hybrid powertrains; next-generation infotainment, cockpit and operation systems; cutting-edge assist systems and an even higher quality interior look and feel: all encased in a charismatic new design that encapsulates the ethos of this second-generation model.
The new T-Roc is underpinned by Volkswagen's latest-generation MQB evo platform that enables a raft of important new features and technology to be incorporated. As such, the T-Roc now benefits from a new version of Travel Assist, the latest Park Assist Pro software (optional on Style and R-Line) and the handy Volkswagen exit warning system. It arrives in the UK with, initially, two 1.5-litre four-cylinder eTSI mild hybrid turbocharged petrol engines, with outputs of 116 PS and 150 PS respectively. These will, over time, be joined by new fully hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). All variants are front-wheel drive and have an automatic seven-speed direct-shift gearbox (DSG).
Building on the unique and eye-catching design of the first-generation cars, the new T-Roc is both bolder and bigger than before. Unmistakable Volkswagen design DNA incorporates a fresh look front and rear, while there's also an important boost to the vehicle's length, with an increase of 122 mm allowing for a useful growth in interior space. Illuminated VW logos, optional IQ.LIGHT matrix headlights with a high-performance additional main beam, and tail light clusters with a three-dimensional appearance create a stylish and functional light signature. The new VW T-Roc's fresh design also informs a functional benefit in the svelte shape of enhanced aerodynamic efficiency: with a Cd figure of 0.29, the new car is about 10 per cent more aerodynamically efficient than its predecessor.
The Volkswagen T-Roc is available in UK showrooms with a choice of three trim options: Life, Style and R-Line.
Exterior design: expressive styling, day or night
Enhancing a successful car design involves having the courage to combine the DNA of a bestseller with fresh elements that signify a new era. The front end of today's T-Roc does exactly that: the 'face' now showcases a stylistic or 'family' relationship with other modern-day Volkswagens such as the Tayron and ID.7. In the new Volkswagen T-Roc every line, every edge, every surface and every curve is based on logic and functionality. Take the bonnet: similar to the Tayron, it is embedded in the contour that runs all the way around the high and uniform design of the front section. The peripheral outer edge of the bonnet becomes a design element in itself. The front line of this edge is merged back into the front end between and above the headlights via a slim chrome or LED strip. The bonnet also features powerful contours with the wide and smooth centre lower, while the side surfaces are higher. The vertical lines between these surfaces meet the imagined continuation of the headlight housing inner boundaries with exceptional precision.
At night, a distinctive light design makes the VW T-Roc just as unmistakable. The car displays a confident look thanks to the dynamic graphics of the LED headlights, further emphasised by the LED Plus headlights (standard on Style and R-Line) and more powerful optional IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights, as well as the full-length LED strip which comes with both of these options. An illuminated VW logo is integrated into this design, and the interaction between these features lends the upper section of the front end a progressive and futuristic appearance.
The front end's lower segment is characterised by the wide grille. At the sides it is bordered by aerodynamic air deflectors, while the sides of the intricate black air grille are refined by elements in the vehicle colour. At the bottom, a spoiler in the style of an undertray guard rounds off the area.
The new Volkswagen T-Roc appears larger, sportier and more confident than in the past from every angle, but this is particularly evident when looking at the silhouette. In the upper area, the designers have added a dynamic enhancement to the silver 'hockey stick' (roof frame strip) and the D-pillar of the predecessor by giving the roof line an even more coupé-like finish. The roof frame strip also separates the body from the roof, and this strip can be painted in a contrasting colour, thereby lowering the T-Roc's visual centre of gravity. The ratio of the roof and window surfaces to the painted body surfaces makes the new T-Roc look more dynamic and, from a practical point of view, the ergonomically designed door handles are now located usefully higher up the doors.
A particularly striking element that forms part of the latest T-Roc's design DNA is the two-part character line. At the front, it evolves out of the LED light strip of the headlights and, with a sharp undercut, runs to just in front of the A-pillar. Below the character line, the flared front wheel arches and wing panels shape the image. The character line does not re-emerge until it reaches the rear section of the rear doors. Here, it rises above the door handles with a radius parallel to the wheel arch and then runs horizontally into the rear end. The rear side area of the character line and the flared wing panels were both distinctive design elements in the first T-Roc and, in the second-generation car, the shoulder area shaped by the undercut has become even more striking.
Completely redesigned, and more distinctive than ever, the Volkswagen T-Roc's rear boasts a more coupé-like shape, with the stretched roof edge spoiler generating a significantly more dynamic appearance. Here, too, the T-Roc now looks bigger and more refined. The entire rear area, including the tailgate which extends much further outwards, has been accentuated horizontally to emphasise the vehicle's width and give it a strong, confident road presence. While its predecessor had split tail light clusters, the second-generation car uses a glass-covered crossbar which is, depending on trim level, illuminated. The rear VW logo, integrated in the middle, is also illuminated red, depending on trim level. Beneath this lies a sculpted number plate area and a diffuser, with the latter giving the SUV an even more sporty look. Above the light strips, the entire rear area is joined by the aerodynamic spoiler lip that extends into the character line and shoulder section.
Taken together, these design revisions and enhancements also support increased aerodynamic efficiency. The car's aerodynamics have been refined in virtual flow simulations and in real-life wind tunnel testing, achieving a significant improvement: at 0.29 Cd (drag coefficient) the new T-Roc is about 10 per cent more aerodynamic than its predecessor.
Interior design: space, style and quality in spades
The new VW T-Roc also takes a big step forward in its interior environment, breaking conventional class boundaries with its liberal use of superior materials, progressive design and innovative technologies. An obvious signifier of this leap in quality is the newly developed fabric on the dash panel. Creating a pleasant, lounge-like atmosphere, it is a visible manifestation of the high-quality ethos that sums up today's T-Roc. The stylishly clean interior deliberately does away with traditional decorative elements, too, with a focus on simplicity that emphasises the value of carefully judged design details. An example is the background lighting, which illuminates the interior with perforated artificial leather surfaces for the first time in a Volkswagen.
Intelligent ergonomic optimisation might sound complex, but the applications are simple and the benefits obvious. For example, the Volkswagen T-Roc's interior door handles have been redesigned. Now integrated into the door armrests, the driver and passengers automatically grasp the aesthetic silver-black handles and intuitively pull them upwards to open - a clear demonstration of 'form following function'. The new T-Roc also adopts a number of details from the larger Tiguan and Tayron - including the latest evolution of the Driving Experience Control for selecting driving profiles and volume levels. Another highlight is the optional windscreen head-up display, while driver-oriented technologies include features such as the new Digital Cockpit in a large rectangular format, which - in addition to the usual views - also offers a completely stripped-back display because the full range of information is not always required.
Taking a seat in the new Volkswagen T-Roc, driver and passengers might easily feel they are not in a compact SUV, so roomy and light is the new car's cabin. The extra 122 mm added to the vehicle's length, allied to a wheelbase up 28 mm, means six-foot-tall adults can occupy front and rear seats simultaneously, with no one feeling like legroom is cramped. That feeling of comfort can be enhanced still further with options such as Varenna leather seats and separately controlled front and rear heated seats, depending on trim level. Naturally, luggage space matches cabin capacity in the five-seat T-Roc: thanks to the increase in length, the luggage compartment volume has increased by 30 litres to 475 litres when loaded up to the height of the rear seat backrests, which fold down at a ratio of one-third to two-thirds. The capacity increases to a generous 1,350 litres when the rear seats are folded down.
The new cockpit landscape in the T-Roc is crystal-clear. The design and architecture of the dash panel are consistently straight and horizontal, while the high-quality interior ethos extends to the top of the dash panel, which features a new, softly padded and high-quality fabric structure that reduces windscreen glare.
In front of the driver, the Digital Cockpit, touchscreen for the infotainment system and air-conditioning controls all extend clearly and logically across one viewing plane. A windscreen head-up display is available as an option, which means that in top-spec models the driver has access to a trio of displays consisting of the Digital Cockpit, infotainment display and head-up display. Another feature in the T-Roc that has been adapted from Volkswagen's larger Tiguan and Tayron SUVs is the enhanced Driving Experience Control. In addition to the driving profiles and drive modes, the new generation of the elegantly illuminated rotary, touch and pushbutton switch also includes the ability to control the optional interior ambience Atmospheres, while a second control is offered for volume levels for the first time in the T-Roc.
New Digital Cockpit Pro (standard on Style and R-Line, not available on Life)
Compared to the predecessor model's Digital Cockpit, the new digital instruments in the second-generation Volkswagen T-Roc are much bigger, with a diagonal of 25.4 cm (10 inches). Using the 'View' and 'OK' buttons in the right-hand bar of the standard multi-function steering wheel, the driver can choose between two different basic info profiles, or configurations: Classic has round instruments, and Progressive uses display tiles. The area between the round instruments or tiles can be assigned freely - for example, with the navigation system's route guidance or displays from the assist systems. The inner areas of the round instruments and tiles can also be filled with a variety of pertinent information, while a new display mode option focusing on simplicity hides all information, except for data required for driving, such as the current speed and notifications from the assistance systems. This allows the driver to concentrate clearly on the road, for example during long night-time journeys.
Head-up display debuts (optional on Style and R-Line only)
Today's T-Roc sees the arrival of Volkswagen's optional windscreen head-up display for the first time in the compact SUV class. The system projects essential information for the driver on to the windscreen, with the display appearing to sit in the space in front of the T-Roc. The virtual projection distance from the driver's point of view is about 2.1 metres. Status and warning indicators on the display include information from Travel Assist as well as information on the current and permitted speed (road sign display) and navigation instructions.
Another big step forward for the latest T-Roc is the arrival of all-new infotainment systems, boasting both new hardware and software. They are based on the fourth-generation modular infotainment system (MIB4). In the UK, all VW T-Rocs feature the 12.9-inch touchscreen system, which, depending on trim level, features a navigation function that can be ordered directly when configuring the vehicle, or activated later. The IDA online voice assistant is also available as an option. This allows voice control of many vehicle and infotainment functions, as well as being able to answer specific questions on almost any topic via the system's access to online databases and artificial intelligence. The applications are almost endless, ranging from tips on restaurants or sights along the route to suitable music suggestions, business trends or even audio stories for any children on board.
The infotainment's touchscreen interface has been divided into three clearly defined levels to make operation as simple and intuitive as possible: the top bar (top), the home screen (middle) and the bottom bar (bottom). Favourite functions can be added as direct access panels in the top bar and home screen. The individually configured top bar and static bottom bar are permanently displayed, while the driver opens various functions in the form of apps on the home screen. Below the infotainment display are the backlit touch sliders for functions such as temperature adjustment and volume control.
The significantly enhanced Driving Experience Control can be used to adjust the audio volume, the driving profiles and the preconfigured Atmospheres. Pressing the display switches the driver between volume, driving profile and Atmospheres control. Touching or swiping is used to switch from the driving profiles to the Atmospheres, with menus shown as pop-ups on the infotainment display. The settings for each function are configured by turning the easy-to-grip, illuminated thumbwheel.
Atmospheres, on board the T-Roc for the first time (optional on Life, standard on Style and R-Line), offer 30 colours of background lighting settings, which merge with the audio system to create a wide range of lighting and sound environments. Playlists from Spotify, perfectly matched to the respective Atmospheres, can also be included. Lounge, Energetic, Joy, Minimal and Me modes are available. Lounge is characterised by muted colours, quiet sounds and classical music. Energetic is the opposite: colours are more vibrant, the sounds louder and the playlist more energetic. Depending on the mode selected, the screen illumination of the Driving Experience Control also changes.
As with many of the new generation of Volkswagens, the latest T-Roc gains a steering column switch to control the seven-speed direct-shift gearbox (DSG). This creates extra storage space in the centre console. Easy to use, the driver simply turns the switch forwards to select D to drive forwards or backwards to select R and engage reverse. Pressing the switch sideways activates the parking brake. Meanwhile a new multi-function steering column switch is also used for the indicators and windscreen wiper functions.
Turbocharged petrol engine and 48-volt system
The Volkswagen T-Roc's two eTSI engine options produce either 116 PS (85 kW) or 150 PS (110 kW). Both 1.5-litre four-cylinder engines are designed as mild hybrids (eTSI) with a 48-volt belt-driven starter alternator. With peak torque figures of 220 Nm and 250 Nm, respectively, these turbocharged petrol engines are connected to a lithium-ion battery. The 48-volt system provides an additional 14 kW of power and 56 Nm of torque on a temporary basis. The system is supplied with electrical energy via recuperation. On the one hand, the additional boost of electrical power enables the T-Roc to perform impressively from a standing start while, at the same time, the technology makes it possible for the 1.5 TSI evo2 to be switched off completely at times, thereby enabling the SUV to coast.
The 1.5 eTSI from the familiar Volkswagen EA211 engine range is a cutting-edge drive system with variable turbine geometry (VTG) turbocharger, TSI evo combustion cycle and ACTplus Active Cylinder Management. Combining these three important features is unique in the field of large-scale production petrol engines, emphasising Volkswagen's commitment to both the latest technologies and their efficient applications at scale.
In the TSI-evo combustion cycle, the decisive factor in terms of efficiency and power deployment is the symbiosis of the Miller cycle (the early closing of the intake valves with high compression) and VTG charging. The petrol-air mixture is run with lambda 1 efficiency (the ideal air-fuel ratio for an internal combustion engine) throughout the entire operating range of the engine. The TSI does not run either too rich (excess petrol) or too lean (excess oxygen), as the fuel is burnt completely and cleanly. Thanks to this combustion process, the 1.5 TSI evo2 operates highly efficiently in order to minimise consumption and emissions. Other important technical parameters include high-pressure injection with up to 350 bar pressure, plasma-coated cylinder liners to help lower internal friction, and pistons with cast-in cooling channels to optimise combustion.
Alongside these sophisticated engineering benefits, the T-Roc's 1.5 TSI evo2 engine also boasts ACTplus Active Cylinder Management. With ACTplus, two of the engine's four cylinders are switched off as often as possible, depending on need. The second and third cylinders are designed to be taken out of the fuel supply at low and medium loads and speeds. Efficiency thus increases in the active cylinders, while the passive cylinders run almost loss-free. When the throttle is opened, they immediately become active again. Crucially, switches between the two- and four-cylinder drive system are virtually imperceptible to the driver.
The 48-volt system with belt-driven starter alternator
The mild hybrid 48-volt system was designed, simply, to save fuel. Depending on the driving style and ambient conditions, meaningful savings of about half a litre per 100 km can be achieved due to coasting and load-point shifting in the engine. The 48-volt technology supports the transmission of higher electric power levels with smaller conductor cross-sections and a compact 48-volt lithium-ion battery - also resulting in low additional weight. Compared with vehicles using conventional 12-volt technology, this leads to the recuperation of a significantly larger amount of energy during braking or deceleration. The energy stored in the lithium-ion battery is used to supply the 48V belt-driven starter alternator, as well as the 12-volt vehicle electrical system via a DC/DC converter. The water-cooled, belt-driven starter alternator has the role of alternator and starter. At the same time, it acts as a compact electric motor, which increases the drive torque without any delay when moving off. The output of the alternator is transferred by the belt drive, while the alternator also restarts the TSI - which is switched off as much as possible while the vehicle is moving.
For decades, Volkswagen has been sharing the benefits of its pursuit of technological progress with the owners of its cars across the price spectrum, and the new T-Roc is no exception. Volkswagen's intelligent use of economies of scale once again results in the latest assistance technology being available to T-Roc buyers. The second generation of this best-selling compact SUV is based on the MQB evo platform - the latest iteration of the modular transverse matrix, whose systems are also used in the Tayron and Passat. As such, the T-Roc now benefits from these same hardware and software developments as its bigger siblings.
Among the highlights is a new development of Travel Assist, which supports automatic lane changes. Predictive control for speed limits, bends, junctions and roundabouts has also been improved while, for the first time, the new T-Roc also has cutting-edge systems such as Park Assist Pro on board. Here, a memory function enables 'trained' and thus fully automatic manoeuvring over distances of up to 50 metres. Parking and exiting parking spaces can even be carried out remotely via a smartphone. Another new feature on board the T-Roc is an exit warning system, which can warn occupants about to open their doors if bicycles or cars are approaching from the rear.
Optional or equipment-dependent assistance systems:
Two of the Volkswagen T-Roc's optional assistance systems, Travel Assist and Park Assist, have undergone significant enhancements coinciding with their availability in this compact SUV. Thanks to a new software version and enhanced sensors, the optional Travel Assist is available for more traffic scenarios and reacts with even greater balance. The system now considers the route of the vehicle in front and remains active even if a lane marking disappears. The longitudinal guidance has become more balanced overall, too, and speed limit changes can now be made intuitively by tapping the accelerator pedal. In combination with the standard-fit Side Assist and optional Park Assist Pro, which is integrated in the corresponding specification package with Travel Assist, the system now allows for assisted lane changing on multi-lane motorways at speeds of about 42 mph and above.
When Travel Assist is active, it predictively integrates features of the upcoming route - such as corners, roundabouts and junctions - into the vehicle's control and driver displays. For instance: if there is a corner ahead and the set speed is too high to safely negotiate the bend, the system shows the message 'corner ahead' and the speed is adjusted accordingly. This anticipatory response means the driver uses the assist system intuitively and, therefore, more frequently. Finally, Travel Assist can protect those on board the T-Roc as well as other road users. Using the emergency function, it senses if the driver is unresponsive and automatically steers the SUV on to the hard shoulder while sounding the car horn and flashing the hazard warning lights, before bringing the vehicle to a stop.
Park Assist Pro is already familiar from other Volkswagen models and allows assisted driving into, or out of, parallel or bay parking spaces. Newly applied to the VW T-Roc, it takes over control of acceleration, braking and steering for this purpose.
A new feature for T-Roc drivers is the memory function for this new and enhanced Park Assist Pro. Here, the system records the last 50 metres driven, including the final parked position. The parking manoeuvre can be stored when the Volkswagen has come to a stop and, when the T-Roc reaches this position again, it automatically offers to take over parking. Independent driving out of a parking space is also now an option, and up to five parking manoeuvres can be stored.
Remote parking is also new to the T-Roc. Using Park Assist Pro and an app of the same name, it is possible to drive into and out of parking spaces remotely from outside the vehicle using a smartphone as a 'remote control'. This remote parking function was available initially in the luxury-class Touareg SUV, but now the system has been extended to Volkswagen's large-volume SUV models: the Tayron, Tiguan and new T-Roc.
