Renault is a French multinational automaker founded in 1899 by the brothers Louis, Marcel, and Fernand Renault as Société Renault Frères. Based in Boulogne-Billancourt, it focuses mainly on mass-market passenger cars. Notable models include the post-war 4CV, the R4 and R5 hatchbacks, and the pioneering Espace minivan of 1984, and today the Clio and Mégane. Since 1999 it has formed the Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance with its Japanese partners. The French state holds about 15% of the shares; the brand is active.
