Porsche 944 Turbo Coupe
Typical Porsche: the story of this 944 Turbo began on the race track. Starting in 1987, 250 PS engines were used in the 944 Turbo Cup one-make series. These engines would also enter series production in model year 1988, having been used initially in the special 944 Turbo S. Just one year later, this car replaced the 220 PS predecessor to the 944 Turbo, finally finding its way onto public roads.
The new 944 Turbo was distinguished by a bow-shaped wing on the rear, among other features. In addition to the race-tested front engine with water cooling, the Turbo featured the 16-inch flat-dished alloy wheels from the Turbo S, sports suspension, ABS as standard, and internally ventilated brake discs all round. The five-speed manual gearbox was installed on the rear axle. The resulting transaxle design with the engine in front and gearbox in the rear gave the Porsche 944 Turbo an almost ideal weight distribution and correspondingly good road-holding qualities.
After building 3,738 units of the model, Porsche discontinued production of this transaxle sports car as planned in 1991.
