Tata Motors is an Indian carmaker headquartered in Mumbai and part of the Tata Group conglomerate; the company was founded in 1945 as TELCO, originally a locomotive maker. It entered passenger-car production in the 1990s (the Tata Indica, India's first fully indigenous car) and in 2008 launched the Tata Nano, one of the world's cheapest production cars. That same year it acquired Britain's Jaguar Land Rover from Ford. It is one of India's largest carmakers and remains active.
