Proton is a Malaysian carmaker founded in 1983 on the initiative of then Deputy Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad as Malaysia's national car company. It initially built cars derived from Mitsubishi, but in 2000 it introduced its first in-house model, making Malaysia one of the countries able to design a car from scratch. Its models include the Saga, Wira, Satria, Impian and GEN-2. The company is active; since 2017 China's Geely has held a minority stake, with DRB-HICOM of Malaysia as the majority owner.
