Oldsmobile was an American automaker and a division of General Motors, founded in 1897 by Ransom E. Olds; at its closure it was the oldest surviving American car brand. It was known for technical innovations and for models such as the Cutlass, North America's best-selling car in 1976, and the Rocket V8 engine line. Amid declining sales, GM announced its wind-down in 2000, and production ended for good in 2004. The brand is defunct.
