Mini is a British car brand. The original Mini was designed by Alec Issigonis and launched in 1959 under the BMC group; the small car with a transverse engine and front-wheel drive became an icon of the 1960s. Production of the classic Mini ended in 2000 after roughly 5.4 million units. BMW then acquired the rights to the name and in 2001 introduced a new generation as a premium small car. Sporty versions carry the Cooper and Cooper S badges. Mini is active and is shifting to electric power.
