Lada is the brand of the Russian carmaker AvtoVAZ, based in Tolyatti; production of its first cars began in 1970 and the Lada name was used mainly for exports. The marque focuses on affordable vehicles; among the best known are the 2101 (derived from the Fiat 124), the Niva off-roader from 1977, and the more recent Granta and Vesta. Renault held a controlling stake in AvtoVAZ from 2008 to 2022 but sold it to the state institute NAMI after the outbreak of the war in Ukraine. Lada remains the best-selling brand on the Russian market.
