Daimler was a British carmaker founded in 1896 in London, with manufacturing in Coventry; it is unrelated to the German Daimler group. It built luxury cars and limousines, supplied cars to the British royal household from 1902, and was known for its sleeve-valve engines and fluid flywheel transmission. From 1960 it belonged to Jaguar and later to Jaguar Land Rover (Tata Motors). The last Daimler cars, luxury saloons based on the Jaguar XJ such as the Super Eight, were built in 2009, and the marque is now inactive.
