Daihatsu is a Japanese car manufacturer based in Ikeda near Osaka and one of the oldest Japanese makers of internal-combustion engines; the company's roots reach back to 1907 and it has operated under the Daihatsu name since 1951. It specialises in kei cars, Japan's smallest vehicle class, and in compact models for emerging markets in Southeast Asia. Since 2016 it has been wholly owned by Toyota. In 2023 and 2024 the company was hit by a scandal over rigged crash-test results.
