Volkswagen is a German car manufacturer founded in 1937 and based in Wolfsburg; its name is German for a people's car. It became world-famous for the Beetle and, from 1974, the Golf hatchback, and also builds the Polo, Passat and the Transporter van. It is the founding and core brand of the Volkswagen Group, which also owns Audi, Škoda and Porsche. One of the world's largest carmakers, it has invested heavily in electric mobility in recent years and remains active.
